Hi There

I am new to this forum and a few hours ago my Swordtail gave birth in a breeding trap I have set up.

11 fry are swimming about in it  . We released the mother into the main aquarium as we didn't want her to eat the fry.

We have noticed she still has a belly full of fry waiting to come out though. She can get stressed when we put her in the breeding trap but soon settles down. We do not want to risk the fry being eaten but we would like to have a few more.

What would you reccomed we do?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Sam

best thing for mum as you know is to leave her in the main tank to get over the birth,
she may have more in the main tank, the only thing you can do is add floating live plants, as the fry tend to be in this, then you can add any new fry to the 11 you have, 11 fry is a good number for you to bring up for now and in 4-5 weeks there will be more, good luck with them Donna :good:

Breeding traps are not great ideas in general. If you can have the mother give birth in a full tank, that would be best. It's less stress on the mother. If you're worried about fry being eaten, you can get fake plastic floating plants for them to hide in until they grow bigger.

when a females gives birth she already had another batch of eggs ready to go, this is why when some fish give birth they still look quite fat.

I would not worry to much, but keep an eye out as course u could find more fry is she has held on to some fry.
