Hi guys, need some help here. I recently bought a senegal bichiir on a bit of impulse. Don't get me wrong I had done my research when I was gonna get one for my 90gal but since changed that for malawi since I couldn't find any back then. Anyway I am gonna put this in my 40gal now but need some help on changing my stocking. I have set up a 30 gal and just need to know what I should put in there to make room now. As it stands I have a;

40gal 48"x15"x12" in this is:

1x African spotted catfish
1x Blood Parrot
1x Firemouth (not sure about this, it is very ill at the moment, not sure it will survive)
2x Hoplo cats
1x Senegal Bichiir
1x Red Tailed Black Shark
1X African Butterfly Fish
1x Leopard Climbing Perch

I know this is overstocked (although it is debatable), an I want to move the firemouth to the 30gal as it was being bullied by the parrot. I also want to move the ABF and Climbing Perch. Would a pair of Rams be ok in that 30 gal as well? I m not sure about them with the firemouth but it isn't looking good for him unfortunately. Thx in advance.

If you don't care much for your firemouth just get rid of it,give it one good bash because if it's that ill it's probably suffering. Aswell it may infect the rest of the fish also.

30 gallon+40 gallon=70gallons so you've got room for 70" of fish.

senegal bichiir=20"
leopard climbing perch=6"
African Butterfly Fish=7"
Red Tailed Black Shark=5"
2XHoplo cats=14"
Blood parrot=10"
African spotted catfish=10"
=63" so 63 gallons is the amount you need.
[with the firemouth=69.5"/69.5gallons]

So you're at the perfect stocking rate at the moment.
I'm sorry i can't help you put which ones in which tank...
but i don't really know much about any of your fish
just make sure in your 30 gallon tank you put in 30" of fish
and in your 40gallon tank put 40" of fish. it should work out perfectly.

I definitely don't know anything about your fish except that they are all large fish and that the 1" per gallon guide won't really work with them. It really only applies to thin bodied fish under 3 or 4 inches long. Just because of the adult size of most of your fish and the waste they produce since they eat live food, I'd say that you were overstocked and couldn't add anything else.

I agree the 1 gallon per a fish rule only works for small and short fish. No more than half an inch high and less that 5 inches long. Almost all of yours are much larger than that, or will be soon. Your tank is fairly overstocked IMO, I would cut that in half and put half of them in another tank of the same size.

Thx for the replies. I dont work off the 1" per gallon rule, as you say it is for smaller fish and, if you ask me it is much better to use common sense once you roughly know what you're doing. The thing to take into account with the larger fish is space within the tank and adequate/over filtration, of which I have both in the 4 foot tank right now. I was more concerned about what fish would be able to move to the smaller confines of the 30gal tbh.

Sorry, forgot to mention. I am trying everything to save this Firemouth, I do want to keep him and I'm not one for euthanasia unless it is a done deal it is going to die and even then I prob wouldn't do it myself.
