Hi new here.
I set up a tropical tank about 3 weeks ago and ever since we have been having problems.I admit we overfed the fish as we have never kept fish before so didn't know this would cause a problem.

We have high ammonia and nitrate levels and our local aquarim 'shop' has given us Aqualibrium and AmQuel Plus 1fl oz to treat the problem.
Now we changed the water(about half) 2 days ago(on Tuesday) and took the water for another test at the 'shop' today and it was still bad. They said it might take a week or 2 to clear it up?
They usggested we change about 1/3 of the water again and add more AmQuel plus.

What i need to know is as it's not very clear on the bottle/package is how much of the salt to i add?
We have added about a teaspoon eahc time we changed the water so far should we be adding more?

Also the AmQuel plus says add a teaspoon for every 15 gallons(i believe 58l is around 15 gallons?) so we added about a teaspoon and a half each change,is this enough?
I thought we might have to add more as the items didn't cost that much so thought it might be a one treatment bottle/packet?

Thanks for your help in advance as i don't want to lose anymore fish which we are doing especially the Neon's :-(

How many fish and which type as some fish can't tolerate salt.

Also do you have your readings in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

No we haven't got a test kit as we have just been taking the water to the 'shop' for them to test but i suppose it will be a good idea to buy one hey?

We have 3 neon's now as another 2 died this morning,1 dalmation(did have 2 but again one died) 2 silver molly's and a male guppy(again had 2 but one only survived a day or 2) :-(

Neons are very sensitive to water quality and usually need a mature tank of six months, guppys are not very good either with water quality.
Salt usually one tablespoon to 5gal, but you are meant to add it gradually, but i wouldn't add the full dose with the neons say half one tablespoon to 10gal.

Thanks can i ask if i have added the correct amount of AmQuel?

It's only a 1fl oz bottle and i have only added about a teaspoon per water change which has been two so far

Edit:I forgot i also have a Albino Cory in there

One teaspoon than to 15gal wouldn't add anymore with the cory, they can handle small doses, just keep an eye on them, if they start acting weird do a water change to remove it from the tank.

So i've added the right amount then?
Should that clear up the problem and bring the levels down to zero.Sorry i know you haven't got readings as i haven't :/
Are they right in saying it might take a week to clear the problem up?

Without readings i can't say sorry.

Also, begin doing daily water changes of 25%. Depending on how high the ammonia and nitrites are, you can do two, one in the morning and one at night. Ideally this would be best.

I would strongly recomend you investing in a test kit. They are worth every penny. Because poor water quality is often the cause of fish illness and death, it is a good thing to have. Look for a master test kit that has ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. I have the Aquarium Pharmiceuticals test kit and I love it. The link i gave you has it on sale for $13 which is a really good price.

Thanks for you help guys it's very much appreciated :)

Sadly i'm in London so would have to look for something similar over here in the UK.

Thanks again

Ouch £17 are they all that expensive?

That one of the cheaper brands, but value for money as they last ages compared to the tetra one's as i've just bought an ammonia test kit in that brand, you do need them.

Yes i agree.
