Hi,

I have had my tank up and running for about 6 weeks now and didnt have any problems until this weekend. I have had a massive brown alge bloom and after 3 days im still fighting with it!
Its mainly on the sand and ive noticed a few of my plants have turned brown... this is the only plant i have in my tank at the moment:

Is this plant ok in a tropical tank? If not wich ones should i get as I am off work tomorrow and plan on sorting the tank out!

Also... the tank is in my conservatory. It never gets direct sunlight but it will get very bright in there in the day... should I invest in a UV sterilzer? Will it help?

Any help would greatly appreciated!!

That plant (egeria) is ideal for tropical tanks and should do fine in almost any conditions. Its very hard to kill which is why its taking over and killing many ponds and water ways in the UK.

Don't bother with a UV they don't really help with algae control. I ran one and still got lots of algae. Your best bet is to minimise the natural light the tank gets and just reply on artificial lighting.

Algae is often due to a lack of plants in a tank. Healthy, lush plant growth = minimal algae.

hi i have just started up a tank again after & years, reason i stopped the last time was due to the algae and my tank was located in the conservatory!! i have put the tank elsewhere this time round and have invested in more plants and catfish = no problem with algae so far (2months up and running) i'm unsure if its the location or plants or catfish but together they seem to be working. good luck!
