I have had a tropical tank for years but I am no expert, I have kept Discus for years but sadly the last of them died about a year or so ago so I decided to give angel fish a try, I bought 4 angel fish about 9 months ago and are already 3 times bigger, I have one of them that is a bully but I would really like to add something else I have tried gouramys platys, swords but they lasted 3 hrs before the angel fish killed them I even have a large sail fin plec with them and they nip big holes in his large fin. The 4 angel fish look lovely but boy are they aggressive. Can I introduse a few new angel fish or would that be a disaster. My tank is a good size 4ft x 2ft and has plants and wood in but it would be nice to see a few more fish in it.

Hi subarucaz :)

Welcome to the forum! :hi:

I'll move your thread to the New World Cichlid section where Angel Fish keepers will be more likely to see it and respond. :D

Angels will get aggressive & territorial as they mature, the name is a real fooler. They all will have differing personalities, very similar to dogs & other animals. From the same spawn some can be quite docile & laid back, while others can be murderously territorial.

Introducing some new angels straight in could be a disaster. Angels key their territory off of objects in the tank. Remove the existing angels, put them in another tank, this will be their home for a day or two. You can use a Rubbermaid tub, or any other largish vessel that will hold water. Rearrange the tank decorations, this destroys old territories. It helps to arrange them as a sort of natural divider, they will tend to end their territory at this point.

Add the new angels to the rearranged tank, let them settle in for a couple of days. At this point add the previous stock. This doesn't always work, but it is the best shot you have. Sometimes it takes a few tries.

You also may have a pair forming, depending on their age. On one side of the redecorated tank place some tallish objects at a bit of an angle, all the way to one side or another. They will claim this as their spawning site, and defend it.

Is it the 1 bully Angel killing off the other fish ? If so, I would re-home that one fish. If a pair forms , it is possible they will kill off the other 2 Angels. Just keep an eye out.

You may be able to try some dither fish which would be less threatening to the Angels. I have 10 Danios in my tank. They are fast and zippy and stay near the top of the tank for the most part. Some say Danios are too nippy, but I have never had a problem with them. The long finned Danios are really pretty.

Re-arranging the tank as Tolak suggested worked wonders for me. I didn't remove the fish, just took all the decor out for a day and replaced it. I suppose removing the fish as well may make the chances of it working even better.

I have a 5ft. In it are

9 Angels
4 Otos
2 Clown loaches (3 more to come eventually)
3 Cherry barbs (7-10 more to come at some stage)
6 Peppermint BN (juvenilles)
5 Common BN (juvenilles)
1 Cory
1 Redtail shark
& some Riffle shrimp

On Friday i added 2 new angels to the tank. The tank contains 2 breeding pairs (plus with what appears to be a new pair forming, so that will make 3 pairs). I do not rearrange the tank to add them in. 1 existing angel was acting highly aggressive to the new comers, so was removed to another tank for timeout for 2 days, i put him back yesterday and now no probs. I have a relatively peaceful tank, with the occassional bluster at each other (no damage done type) other than that they all get along great.
