Hello

One swordtails has died. Last night she was gasping at the surface of the water and was sat on a leaf. She made no effort to move, not even when I opened the tank lid.

She has jagged fins.

She seems to have a whitish belly. Could this be because she is dead?

I can’t see any other symptoms.

I lost a platy a week or so ago, which also had jagged fins. The platy also had cloudy eyes.

Every other fish in the tanks seems ok. Apart from one of my platys doing a weird kind of dance. Moving backwards and forwards.

I thought it could be fin rot, but is not fin rot a secondly infection?

Is fin rot contagious?

Could it be a bacterial infection?

Can anyone help?

Thanks

to be honest, you can't expect an accurate diagnosis from an internet forum. BUT....

gasping at the surface usually means your filter has stopped working / chemical polution. Your fish is not getting enough oxygen. Do a bid water change and temporarily add aeration. I use to get this when I used internal filters that had a low flow, and had jammed up (without you noticing). Has the water got murky?

If this is only affecting 1 fish in a tank, probably not the case. Could be a disease that affects gills and breathing - velvet, or other possibilities. It could also be damage due to a fish being moved from hard to soft water. Osmotic changes can hurt gills.

Your fish wants to breathe!

the reason why i have posted this topic is because all the fish shops are shut.

do you think a water change 30 % wil help? or will it just stress the fish
