Hello,

I have a Jewel 180 Tank which had been running for 8 weeks. At the moment I have just 7 Zebra Danios in the tank. I have the following readings:

GH - 200
KH - 150
PH - 7.5
No2 - 0
No.3 - 0
Ammonia - 0

I have been doing a weekly water change of approx 15% with a mixture of treated tap and Ro water.

I know the KH is far too high and the GH could be lower. From the tap the GH and KH are 200 and 240.

How can I lower these amounts safely and once lowered keep them at a lower figure. I know that you can use just RO water but hear not using soem treated tap water takes away some nutrients. If your suggestion is to just go for RO water, what treatments can I get to keep these nutrients in the water.

Thanks for all your help.

the only things you want from tap water is the water. Most of the nutrients are not wanted. The minerals in the tap water are good for stabilising the PH but can be a problem if you are trying to breed soft water fishes.

If you want to drop the hardness then use R/O water for the water changes. I would use a 50/50 mix of R/O & tap water for softwater fish. However, most fish will be fine with the tap water you have.

what does RO stand for? i sell it at work but never wanted to ask encase i look stupid

R/O is reverse osmosis

R/O water is filtered thru various screens and membranes in order to force out heavy metals and minerals in the water. Theoretically it is close to pure water but it depends on the quality of the R/O unit.
