Hey dudes, the tanks looking awesome at the moment but I'm worried about a few of my fish.

They have black, splodge/spot patterns around their mouths

I've read around google but the only thing that sounds like this is "spirulna spots" -_-

Can any of you guys help me here, are they gonna start dropping like flys?

Thanks in advance,

Maximus

Any other symptoms? Which fish are afflicted? What's your water stats? Anyway you could get pics?

If it is spirulina spots, it's caused by feeding pure spirulina too often with nothing mixed in, it's harmless and should clear up if you cut back or stop feeding the spirulina for a while. Spirulina should be mixed with other food.

Hmm, I don't know my water stats at the moment, but I have work in the morning, I'll take a sample.

No other symptoms what so ever, just the blotches/spots.

The fish dont seem bothered at all.

I think its the "crisps" that I'm feeding as a staple diet
What should I be mixing it with?

I have frozen veg mix enriched with brine shrimp, but this shouldn't be fed too often either right?

It's one of the hybrids, Elongatus Mpanga and two Callainos that are affected.

Thanks for the reply :good:

Oh, I'll try and get a photo uploaded tomorrow, borrowed the cable to a friend (why?!)

Cheers,

Maximus

Hmm, are the "crisps" pure spirulina? You can get other foods (flake, pellets, etc) that are touted for african cichlids, and mix them with the spirulina.

What you've got is just fine, I'd probably feed one food at a time instead of mixing them and just rotate. Ex. day one- first feeding- nutrafin crisps, second feeding - tetramin, Second day - spirulina stick, second feeding nutrafin; etc. Alternately, you could just rotate between the nutrafin and tetramin, and just add the spirulina in their place once or twice a week.

Hmm, so it's still a kinda mystery

I have just had a look at them and noticed (hope this doesn't sound stupid lol) that it's the
"big eaters" of the tank lol. The slightly larger, more boistrous ones in there

Still, without a photo, it's gonna be hard to tell.

thanks again,

Maximus

Hmm, affraid not :/

It's worse then that, obliously something not right :grr:

Photo's are on there way after work tomorrow, watch this space.

Oh, and awesome fish mark :p

Cheers,

Maximus

Right, I got the cable back this morning (never again matt :grr: )

I've stopped feeding the spirulina enriched brine shrimp for a week now, and cut right down on the "crisps"

The splodges are complete gone!

I don't have a clue what it was -_-

What should I do about my feeding then?
It's mainly based on the nutrafin max sticks now.

Cheers,

Maximus

P.s Check my conversion thred :p

The splodges were probably from too much spirulina. I'd just slowly start introducing the other foods back in, just don't feed them as often.
