i got a tank in my room and the mollie which i got yesterday has had babies today, i just counted and saw bout 6, as soon as she had a baby the dad ate 1, so i put him in one of my other 2 tanks aroung the house. my mollie has now stopped having them, and well im scared she'l eat the, shes eaten 1 already!
should i move her to one of my other 2 tanks?!?! i dont have a breeder net
how do i look after babies?!

ASAP!! thanks :good:

Hi, congrats on the babies. Make sure there is plenty of plants etc in the tank for the fry to hide in. Often the adults eat the young when they are born but after a day or so, they don't take much notice. I think they chase more when the fry darts away really quickly. The babies seem not so scared after a while as well. I suppose everyone has to get used to each other.

You probably won't really want to save every baby they have after a while. This first drop wasn't very many, but they reproduce about every month and can be 20 upwards, usually more! Anyway, good luck, and make hiding places for the lucky few.

chhers , but well its quite a big tank, and it now only has the female mollie and all the fry!!! should i move the female mollie into my other tank witht he other fish and let the babies grow up in my tank?

do i just grind food up dead small to feed them?!

I've found the best way to grind up flakes is to put about half a teaspoonful, doesn't really matter how much, into a flat bottomed container. I use an empty shallow fish food pot. Use the back of the spoon to grind the flakes almost to powder. If you then damp the tip of the spoon in the water, shake of the excess, then put just the end into the powder, make sure you don't have too much, and then dip this into the tank. The food will slowly sink to the bottom and the fry will eat it on the way down. Better to do this a couple of times with a very small amount. My fish have got the hang of this really quickly, and it stops the food wizzing round on the surface. Mum will eat some of this as well, but you can give her the odd larger flake. If you can get a microworm culture going, they love this and it's really easy.

As to taking her out, where would you put her the next time she has young and the time after that. Just plant up a corner of your tank. Even some stones or marbles piled up a bit will give some protection. and nooks to hide in. She may get stressed if she's moved too much especially after just giving birth. Don't forget, if not many survive this time, get the tank prepared for next time, coz it won't be that far away!
