I recently brought 3 female guppies and 1 male. 2 were pregant when i got them and both are close to having there babies. I was not sure which 1 was going to have her babies 1st so this morning i placed both in a breeding box within the tank. Within a few hours one of my pregnant females guppies lost all her colour in her tail and her tail dosent look normal. What is wrong with her and is she going to die? My other pregnant female guppy is happy and healthy she is also larger than the other one but there gravid spots are the same colour and size.
Guppys dont get much of a chance to relax. They usually go from baby, to pregnant without much time to grow and stay healthy. It could be that the female that has lost her colour is simply tired. The shock of being moved to a breeding box could have pushed her a bit too far, so she has lost colour - which will come back when she recovers.
I would be tempted to put the sick fish back in the main tank, and treat the tank with some "anti-bacteria" type treatment to reduce the numbers of background bacteria present, giving the fish a chance to gain some strength, and prevent any illness from setting in. Since they are new additions to your tank, the use of a treatment would knock out any new "bug" that could have come from the water your fish came in.
Have you checked your water parameters recently?
There will be plenty more times to get babies from the other fish.
Quick question: I forgot to ask.
Has the sick fish got any funny marks on it? Bits of fluff, white dots, or torn fins? Is she swimming upright, or falling over?
