Some lfs will tell you an african cichlid will look beautiful in your community tank. They need to make money and some don't care how they do it. If you are showing 0 for ammonia and nitrites, that's good. 0 for nitrates might be a false reading. The api nitrate test has to be done exactally as the directions state or you will get a false reading. Where it says to vigerously shake the bottle, they aren't kidding. You need to shake the h*** out of it. Bang it on the table a few times and shake, shake, shake. Try that and retest, see if you get 0.

Thats a good tip, maybe I've been testing wrong, I have been shaking it but shall try again as you've said. Thanks

hey guys I done my water test again as recommended and I got totally different results compared to last time, here's the stats PH -7.4, Ammonia - 0.25ppm, Nitrite - 0ppm and Nitrate- 10ppm , no more deaths as yet and fish all seem ok, so where do I go from here, keep changing water regular?? thanks

+1

You're getting there! Love to see the nitrate numbers, and the ammonia is darn near gone.

Do a water change to get that ammonia down close to zero :) keep it up! Nitrates are a good sign

hi - did i read your message wrong or did u not mention your oxygen supply? - is your water aerated enough? watch the behavior of your fish for this - they shouldn't need to spend most of their time at the surface (unless they're a panchax or other top dweller) are your fish flighty? if there is a slight tap on the tank do they all swim swiftly in panic? This is a great indicator of bad conditions (including over-crowding) r your plants getting enough light to synthesize? they wont produce much oxygen if not - hope this helps - abbyc
