The short explanation: After medicating my tank for other fish that were sick, my PH changed and is now too low, my nitrates are a little high and the tetra's have bad fin tail rot with missing and broken fins and it seems one has scales missing near his dorsal fin.

What do we do? we did a 25% water change yestserday and added some non iodized salt to the tank. Do we try and recoop the quality of the water THEN medicate? I have both Marcyn I and II. Should I just forget the water quality and medicate instead? or can you do you both? perhaps use the "tank Buddies" corrrect PH tablets along with both Marcyns? do you remove the carbon filter to medicate?

Long explanation (if you have time): I have had my 10 gallon tank over a year now. I had two rosy barbs with two columbian red fin tetra's and a bottom feeder. I tried a red tail shark, but he died. recently I added two green tiger barbs and replaced one of rosy barbs that had died.

Shortly after the addition of these 3 fish, one of the Rosy barbs had a bulging eye and got sick, we noticed one of the tiger barbs was not well either, so we medicated the tank with Marcyn II. Within a week or so, both rosy barbs died and one of the green tiger barbs. The rest looked fine ( the remaining tiger barb, the two columbian tetras and the bottom feeder).

But then, I noticed the tiger barb picking away at the my tetras, I wasn't sure, but then the next day, their fins were badly eaten and I noticed fin tail rot on both of them and one, has a large white spot, like the scales are missing near his dorsal fin, which is almost all gone. I immediately seperated the tiger barb, but i fear it may be too late. The Tetra's are still eating and the bottom feeder looks fine.

After medicating, we never changed the water, and the PH is now too low (5.0) and the nitrates a little high. Never before have we had problems with our water in the tank.

What do we do!!

What your tap ph as if there a big difference you can only do small water changes, what med did you use.
Some of the fish sound in a bad way and to be honest I would add some black carbon and get water quality back first.

I just checked the Tap PH, never thought to do that before. IT's between 6.6 and 6.8. I retested the tank water, it's a tad better today, but it's still closer to 6.0 than anything else. I was thinking I should do another small water change, like 10-15%?

I used Marcyn II to treat the pop eye.

I just changed the filter, so I gave it some fresh carbon like you suggested. should I try to correct the PH using the Tank buddies tablets?

how much longer should I wait before treating with Marcyn?

Unfortunately, one of the Columbian Tetra's has this open wound it seems. where the scales are gone something is coming from it, like skin peeling. I feel like I should do something. I just tried to feed him and they are both not eating now...yesterday they did.

When ph is low it can be because you have ammonia reading can we see all stats, till we can get you back on course the meds will just more than likely make matter worse.
plus once bacterial infections get hold of the fish like yours have as there secondary infections on top, the odds go down of the fish surviving i'm afraid, bad water quality won't be helping them.
Its medicate and make tank conditons worse and loose fish, get water quality back on track.

Oddly enough, the ammonia is not too bad. Here are the stats.

Ammonia: very close to 0, definately less than .25ppm
Nitrate: Between 0 and 5ppm, a little closer to 5
Nitrite: 0
PH: now around 6.4

Still not looking good for the Tetra.

I appreciate your support, I had no idea where to turn. THe pet shops around here are terrible, no one knows anything and there is very little service!

Thanks!

Ok add the med then, but to be honest it could be to late, good luck.

The PH is now 6.6, so I added the meds, but you are probably right, it might be too late for one of the Tetra's, but hopefully I can save the other one.

Would you keep the filter working white medicating with Marcyn?

Thanks once again!

Yes keep filter working, remove black carbon or zeolite if you use it.
Might send the water cloudy.
Increase aeration, good luck.
