I'm a newbie and today my Bolivian Rams have laid eggs. In our tank we have a Bristlenose Catfish which is worrying me. Do I need to put the parent fish and the eggs in our hospital tank/nursing tank or just the eggs? Please help? :-(

Post in the right part of the forum will get more help over there.

If the eggs are laid on a hard surface, you can remove just the eggs. But when you take out the eggs you have to treat the water in the nursing tank to prevent fungus. As the female usually prevents this the best she can by fanning the eggs. Also you can put the pair in another tank and let them breed once more. What other fish are in there other then the BN?

We've got 6 Corydoras and 2 more Bolivian Rams and 4 Golden Gouramis. They laid the eggs on a fake stone arch ornament.

The guy in LFS told us to take some gravel from our main tank and put it in our nursing tank as we don't have any in there at the mo, is this right?

I don't know if I should just take the eggs out or take the eggs and parents or even take all of the Rams out and put in the nursing tank. I worry about them fighting when re-introducing back into main tank.

I would say your best bet is either to take out the eggs and try to hatch them in the nursing tank or let these eggs be and once they are gone place the pair in the nursing tank to breed again. There shouldn't be too much aggression when they are introduced, nothing to be too worried about.

Thanx for your advice. :good: We've taken the eggs out on the stone and put them in the nursing tank on their own. I felt really sorry for Mum and Dad who are still defending the spot where they were even now. So fingers and toes crossed, we'll see what happens.
We only bought these fish about 3-4 weeks ago and the 3 females all had their egg tubes exposed from the day we got them. It was still a surprise though when they spawned yesterday. :shout:

make sure the nursing tank is bare and the water is the same quality as in the main tank they came from. if you can put an air pump/stone in the tank, position the airstone underneath the ornament that the eggs are on so the bubbles pass over the eggs. this will keep the water and oxygen circulating around them and mimics the female 'fanning' the eggs.
if you see any white eggs, these are infertile and will go mouldy. if not removed the mould will spread to the 'good' eggs too and kill them :)
you can add m.blue to prevent fungus growth

you may want to also start hatching some brineshrimp eggs too so the babies have a food source that is small enough to eat when they need it :)

Oh thankyou very much, that's very helpful information. :good: I haven't spotted any white ones yet. :hyper: We've got an airstone in the tank but it's hard to get the bubble flow to go over the eggs. :fun: We've got it as close to them as possible though. We were told to put some gravel in the tank, shouldn't we have? The only other stuff in there is two plastic plants and a moss ball thingy. (can't remember the proper name) Lol.
