I have an orange gourami that is pregnant(I think) and I'm not sure what to do. I have Platy's and Molly's in another tank that Ibreed but I didn't even know that she could get pregnant. She started getting fatter and it would be cool to keep the babies. Could somebody tell me what to do? Can she really be pregnant? Do Gourami's have live birth like the platy's and Molly's or do they have eggs? How would I properly breed them? Is it really difficult? Please help!!! Stephanie

They are not live bearers, they are egg layers.

No; no; eggs; you need a male and a tank set up just for the pair; fairly intermaeiate, not a species to cut your teeth on.

On another note, you gourami probably has a bloat of some sort, possibally droupsy (or however its spelt). Do you have any photos of the fish in its afflicted state? Keep an eye out for the scales protruding, this is a sure sign of droupsy.

I believe that the only way to tell if a female gouramis is ready to have eggs is the development of vertical stripes down her side.

She will only produce eggs once the male has constructed a bubble nest and then he will wrap her, and fertilize them as the leave her.

Any "fattening" could be an illness...

I think you are thinking about Betta, ive never had any Gourami ive kept develop vertical stripes when spawning.

Sorry I misread it, was writing about blue dwarves from my present experience.

Hope someone can give you a definate answer!

Gouramis are egg layers, which mean the female produces the eggs and stores them inside her. In this situation you need a male gourami in order for them to breed. They are not livebearers like guppies or mollies.

They are also bubble nest builders, like betta fishes. If both are ready to breed, the male would build a bubble nest under some floating plants or anything that is floating. The male would then chase the female until she is under the nest and then he'll wrap around her. The female will then release her eggs and the male will inseminate them.
