okay, I have a 46 gallon tank. Ive been trying to figure out what to do with it and a few ideas came into my head(breeding fish, haveing goldfish again...) but i have desided to turn it into a tropical tank. I have a pleco already that will be going in it and i kinda want a cichlid(their so pretty) however, i have heard cichlids are too hard for the biggener, up untill now all i have had is goldfish and bettas, which as we all know are the easiest amongst the easiest. So I was wondering if there are any such thing as a cichlid for a biggener and if so what are some neat tank mates that can be put in with it.(im pretty sure plecos can be housed with anything right?)

Convicts are supposed to be good for beginners, I wouldn't suggest more than one though, even in that big of a tank a breeding pair would mean havoc. Firemouths might be a good choice too.

what other type of fish could go with those type? i want some varaity to my tank.

I'd go for a pair of the peaceful cichlids - rainbows (herotilapia multispinosa) or keyholes. And then a group of shoaling fish like tetras and maybe some platies. And then a nice group of bottom dwellers, cories being the obvious choice.

What kind of plec is it? If it's a common plec, you'll be needing a bigger tank in the long run, around 4ft x 18" x 18". If you've just got him, I'd return him and swap him for one or two bristlenoses ;)
