ive just started setting up a tropical fish tank
im adding the nutrafin cycle to the tank after been told at the local fish shop

now im wondering if i need to add ammonia to the water to build up the bacteria
as i was never told this

also ive read about adding 1-2 hardy fish to build up the ammonia so that the bacteria will build up

i have a 80 litre tank

Hi,
The best method of setting up a tank is called Fishless Cycling, you can read about this in the "Beginners Resource Center" at the top of this forum. The cycle stuff you have been told to add will do very little if anything at all. A typical cycle can take between 4-6 weeks sometimes longer, dont let this put you off though as its 100x easier than a Fish-in Cycle which can take just as long.

Did you condition the water when you added it to the tank?

You dont NEED a bottle of Ammonia there are other sources available however the liquid form is alot easier to measure when adding to the tank. The Nutrafin cycle wont do anything. Bacteria need Oxygen and 'Food' (Ammonia) to stay alive both of which a bottle cannot provide.

Have A Read Of This it explains it alot better than I can

I dont know if boots sell it anymore however I do know that homebase do :good: make sure it is pure Ammonia.

Mike

I agree, the cycle is useless, dont buy it again, your lfs will tell you anything to make a sale!

You need pure ammonia, make sure that when you shake it you dont get any bubbles forming on the surface.

Check out the guides the fishless cycling in the beginners section.

I wouldn't recommend adding any fish until the cycle is completed, especially if you are adding pure ammonia as well, you'd be setting them up to die.

If you dont want to waste the cycle liquid then you could just chuck it in but it will do very little if anything.
