Hey guys,

on friday i won £175 at Gala bingo :D (well worth the £13 to play)

And i have read alot and wanted to make my own planted tank :)

The tank i am gonna use is 36"x12"x15" so about US gallons = 28.05 Uk gallons = 23.36 :)

so i need a two of lights no bigger than 30" inches co i can get them in the hood and two starters to mak them work :D

i was thinking about a couple 30watss would be sufficeient but not sure where to buy from there is so many online retailers and i want decent bulbs nothing i'll need to replace soon !

and also i want to buy some EC for the substrate so please guys help me :D

thanks :)

You need to work out if you want to go high-tech or more low tech, and how demanding you want the maintenance schedule to be :)

Look into the EI (Estimative Index) sticky. Also, look at George's low light planted tank, its fantastic!

You should also consider CO2. If you don't want to use CO2, you may hit algae problems depending on lighting.

Eco-Complete is available from a lot of online places, but not so much in LFS's (or at least, not mine).

You then need to figure out what sort of plants you like and again, what will suit (high or low light etc).

i will be going down the DIY co2 route for sure...

i don't want nothingmega cos i don't have loads of time something that looks good with a few tetra's of some sort in would do me fine..

i know alot of places do the stuff online but not entirely sure which is cheapest thats waht i wanted to know rly :D

Hi James,

I had a look online for my lights and stuff and Charterhouse Aquatics seemed the cheapest plus free delivery if you spend over 50 quid, they arrived very quickly and very very well packed.

Much cheaper than any of the LFS round Oxford.

Thanks for the tip about Maidenhead Aquatics at Wheatley. I got 5 black phantoms for 6 quid, beautiful fish at a bargain price. They're still doing the cory rabauti you got at the same price. I'll be picking some up too soon.

Have a good read through the threads before you decide what to do, there is loads of useful info out there. You need to think well ahead so you know exactly the kind of setup you want then match your lights / ferts etc to that.

I am doing diy CO2 too, my diffusers and tubes arrived today.

Congrats on the Bingo by the way, result!

Andy.

Arcadia 30in. Fluorescent Reflector 2 7.59 15.18
Interpet Convertagear 25/30w 2 12.19 24.38
Eco Complete Planted Substrate 20lbs 1 26.65 26.65

Was thinking of getting that which would give me around 2.4wpg as i have an 18w in the hood atm :)

what you think ?

might swap the EC for some tetraplant pro cos its cheaper and i got plenty of sand laying around to gover the top :) i think the golden sand on top would nicer than darker EC :)

then i could afford to buy a small tank heater and filter for a betta :D

Seems like a good price for what you're getting.

I'm not too up on all the technical specs and so on so best to ask someone else but 2.4 WPG sounds good with some DIY co2 kit and decent substrate.

Do you have a diffuser and bubble counter sorted for your co2?
