Yes. In my opinion, a livebearer always seems to be pregnant! It will take about 3-4 weeks for her to drop the fry. You'll be able to tell she's close when she looks almost square from the front and back.

3 to 4 from now she'll be dropping her SECOND batch of fry! Right now it looks like she's going to give birth any day. If you want to keep the fry, I suggest that you either put her in a breeding net or in her own aquarium. Both she and the other fish in the aquarium will eagerly consume all of the young.

Or add some java moss to your tank or other types of dense plants. Fry are VERY smart and will hide and the strongest/smartest will survive. :flex:

You'd be surprised. I never separated mine and I have more fry than what I know what to do with -- I finally had to move them to another grow out tank because the first one was overcrowded with babies.

im curious about this because ive have a 10 gallon that i have some platty in and they are the only fish in there other then some otos will they be ok or will the plattys eat their own

Live bearers are cannibals and eat their own readily. Swordtails are probably the worst but I have heard of some of the others, Guppies and Platties, being a lot less interrested in doing so. As long as there a good hiding places they have a chance. None of the Sword fry I have turned back in to my tank had a chance, even after the had grown out for two weeks. So I got the second tank!

I think it depends on the platys. I had 1 male and 1 female, and when I brought home a second female and she had fry, the first female at them all but the one you see in my avatar (which is my favorite fish ever haha). However after that the first female had her own fry, and she didn't eat her own, nor did the male or the 5 zebra danios in the tank.

:dunno:
I don't get it, LOL. Maybe I overfeed them and they don't have room in their tummies for fry. ;)
