 Hi I have a four foot tank with two Convicts and six other cichlids along with 2 Bristlenose and a Sucking Loach. They are all babies and very soon are going into bigger tanks.Problem is this afternoon my convicts lucky to be even an inch and a half in length are sitting in a little barrel with a heap of eggs and are guarding them :) I'm happy but not  If that makes sense  It's exciting but now I have to work out what to do :/ Ok this is what I thought I'd do.I have a nice size two foot tank and was thinking(waiting on replies from this post)of putting the two of them in the two foot tank with the eggs on the barrel.Problem is I'm wondering if I lift out the barrel in the air will this even if it's only for a split second kill all the eggs and also will it upset the parents :( I want the best for the babies but the most important thing I worry first about is the actual 8 cichlids, two Bristlenose and Sucking Loach that I already own they come first.I have a pet store that says she wants any babies if my cichlids breed later on so the babies have a home to go to but I wasn't expecting any babies from them when their only babies themselves.(To all yous that read my previous topic how to sex convicts well I guess I know what I have now) Well I would keep them in the same tank with the others but I don't want to risk death or injury as I've heard that they will kill other fish when babies are born.Do I have to worry about this when their only about an inch an a half in length  I've noticed one chasing away other cichlids at present but the other cihlids don't seem interested and don't seem scared of the convicts but when the babies are born I'm thinking this might all change. What am I gonna do any suggestions would be appreciated. It's like I want to set them up in the two foot tank but also don't want to upset them.Problem is if I don't move them now I will no doubt upset the other cihlids. Also how long does it take for the eggs to hatch?Well thanks for reading I'm hoping this is going to work out ok :/ Well Cheers from Steph :)

the eggs will be fine if your just moving them from one tank to another... its if they dry out that they will be damaged....

o and with all convicts.... be prepared to be overrun with fry very quickly. To me, convicts are the livebearers of the egg laying world !!

:) Thanks for the reply Oh no I may get to many babies and the pet shop won't take them all if there is hundreds  Well I was waiting a response before I went ahead with the changeover and the tank to transfer them won't be at right temperature or ready till tommorrow -_- Oh boy I hope the eggs don't hatch between now and then cause they'll all get killed I'm assuming  I really need to clean gravel and do water change tonight now on the tank there in as it's due and has been suffering high nitrite which is gradually all getting better but should I risk leaving the water change till tommorrow until the convicts are out of the tank so it won't upset them  I don't want to sift through the gravel with them in there guarding the eggs they may get really cranky  Are convicts easy to breed too mabye the babies won't even make it  I'ts all a big learning experience to me :) Well thanks so much for the reply it is priceless 'SpOOky' :good:

your welcome bonnie. If you can find an LFS to take them, i dont think you will get much for them tbh. Well, thats based on the UK market. Convicts are dirt cheap over here to buy. I can buy them from my LFS for £1.50 each.... they are prolific breeders and whilst it maybe heartbreaking if they hatch and are eaten, dont worry too much about it because they will seen breed again :)

hi Bonnie, from Kizzy the collie :D . congrats on the babies. my female con is also pregnant again. third time lucky.

steve : :good:

:good: Hi Kizzy and King72 :) Thanks for the post :D Good luck with your convicts I'm waiting on the eggs to hatch but nothing has happened yet.Well I transferred them tonight and the boy doesn't seem happy but the girl just won't leave the eggs.It was so funny when I was catching them they were just absolutely attacking the net and really cranky.Gee they really love there babies  Well all this stress may have upset this brood.Who knows what will happen. I ended up getting gravel and ornaments so that should help the environment for them and in a couple of days I'm hoping they will have settled in.I don't know what to expect and yes I'm a little worried about getting rid of the babies if theres too many as the lady at the pet shop would probably take 30 tops and I think judging by what people have said I'm in for a rude shock :-( Hope I find places to take them otherwise I will have to split them up as I don't want the babies to all be killed :-( Well thanks so much for the replies guys :good:
