oh, so its going to get rather larger than 10-12cm the bloke in the shop told me then.

its ok at the moment as its only about 6-7cm, any idea ho long till it will get too big for my 190ltr tank?
 
Its a surinam type Geophagus, most likely a young altifrons, (but could be a young abalios or dicrozoster)

only time will tell

I'd go as far as to 15-16cm, depending on the exact species. Once the body length is 6-7cm (excluding tail), I would probably be wanting a new tank for it. Also keep in mind that many Geophagus are social fish, so do best in large groups.
 
sizewise it will get to between 6" and 10" depending on species
