I found a baby platy in my tank and it looks as though its a few days old. I took it out and put it in a glass with gravel at the bottom. Will it be ok in the glass, the tanks temprature it usually tropical anyway without the heater on. So will it be ok? How do i feed it?

PLEASE HELP!

You could try crushing up some flake food into a fine powder, see if it will take that. I got special fry food that comes in liquid form got it from my local pet shop. works well but i only fed them that for a week then moved on to crushed flake.

Hey congrats to you on your new arrival, just the one is it?

A glass is not really ideal!! If you have a net breeding net, i take it not otherwise you would have used it then if you have just a regular net for catching your fish you can use it if it is a large net, this can only be a temporary measure for a day or two. Then buying a net breeding net is the only true option, other than buying another tank to grow the fry up in :)

If you have any cover for the fry (babies) they are excellent hiders. How many fish and what type do you have? What size is your tank? I ask because if you have many females you will soon become over crowded if you try to raise every one of them. I have Mollies which are very closely related to platies. I have 2 batches of breeders grass and another artificial plant the fry can hide in. Depending on the size of the momma you can have in excess of 30 fry at one time.

Go here to find out more about breeding your friends. :D

I did have a breeding trap (plastic) and it floats at the top. I lent it to a friend and he hasn't given it back. So will he die in the glass? I don't want to raise every one I find (ya know I just want to say thats I have done it) but with what I have how? My tank is roughly 10gallons and there is alot of places for them to hide but I have a very powerful filter, a bubble wall the length of the tank and 4 dwarf chichlids, so I don't fancy their chances. My fish tank details are below:

Fish
x2 Kirbs
x2 German Rams
x6 platies
x5 galss redtailed tetras
x1 bristle nose
x3 big yellow apple snails

*******Please don't tell me I am over stocked, I do heaps of matanience***

Size:
about 9 and a half gallons

Decor:
A couple fake plants
Bogwood
Gravel
rocks

Any why is a glass not really ideal? I do not want to put it in a net or anything in my tank, it doesn't add to the tanks stunning appearance. O and I forgot to mention, the heater is never heating however I do have a spare..... Please help me and thanks to those who already have.

Good News!
I phoned the lfs and they said to buy a breeding trap (of course) so instead of buying one I thought I would make one to what I needed. First I got a plastic Grill about 15cmx 7cm, I then chopped 4 bits of anm Icecream container and then glued them to the sides of the grill. I then cut a hole in the side of one of the walls and put a suction cup on it. It is now in the tank and just lettin ya know I used non-toxic glue gun to make it. The fry in now happy in his/her new home and I just need more info on raising them.

Never mind,
My home-made breeding trap's grill caused it to escape, thanks for your help everyone!

A net breeder costs all of £3.00 so if you can get down to your fish store get one!! you'll be using it a lot in the future if u are serious about livebearers and it won't be a bad investment! Sorry to hear it escaped good luck finding it, it may be lurking under your plants or bogwood :) And if not :-( then you'll have some of his/her brothers and sisters turn up in about a month

you'll have some of its brothers or sisters turn up in about a month?

Will they survive or will they get sucked up in the filter, eaten or mashed into a pulp by the bubble wall? So in a month they sould be fully grown? Cool I will look foward to it but I doubt that they will survive.....or WILL THEY?
