I have just aquired a large tank that has serveral fish in it that I have no idea what they are.
One is about as big around as a disert plate and only about 3/4 of an inch wide. Its bright yellow. Its not a gold fish know that much. If any one has a clue please let me know. Thanks Lisa

Get dimensions of the tank, length, depth and height. From that you can get the exact capacity.

As for the fish your best bet is to get pictures. But from the sound of it the big round plate shaped fish is a Discus of some variety.

I was thinking angelfish as discus can be harder to acquire and wouldnt be a great first time tank fish. Without a pic though its all speculation.

Is it a discus? I have a tank full of 'em and I think they are the most beautiful freshwater fish you can find. If you have one the size of a dessert plate (6"), yours is worth a few bucks, too. I have a 4" pigeonblood discus and it's worth over $100! I feed mine flakes and frozen bloodworms. They prefer their water to be a little warmer (82 degrees, plus or minus). Search for "discus" online. See if this is your fish. Hope this helps.\\ mrteacherman
