Hi,

I have a sitution with white spot in my tank which i don't seem to be able to clear. Am I doing something wrong? Here is what i have been doing...

I brought a Blue ram which looked abit funny at the time in the shop, I just thought it was down the marking and light reflection (being new to RAMS and shop said it was ok :grr: ), but when I got home and checked it 2 days later it had got worse and indeed turned out to be white spot. I have never had white spot before in any of my tank before now.

I have been treating the tank with Waterlife protozin (stuff that turns water blue), I did it for the amount of the time that the bottle recommended, and it all cleared now 1 week later it back worse i don't know what i have done wrong. :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-(. And more fish now have it and its come back with a vengance. :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :-( :-(

I have been turning my filter off when i have been treating the tank but im now thinking maybe i shouldn't have done this, and just done what the bottle said which was leave external filters running? :/

Any help on this matter would be much appreciated.

:thanks:

I'm sorry to hear that =[ i have whitespot right now too!

Waterlife protozin sounds fine for treatment, even if it suggests not having the filters running, dont take any notice! its just best if you leave it running!

can you turn your temp up? to about 30C + adjust a few degrees every hour, turning up the temp with shorten the lifespan of the whitespot making it quicker to treat!

what is it you have in your tank? have you tested the water? as turning off the filter may have caused some fluctuations

hope this helped a little

I currently have the following in my tank:

1 x bumble bee gobe (sp)
1 x butterfly pleco
2 x chocolate gourmi
1 x clown loach - he had to move into tank last night as other tank is running Alundcara nyasse blue was informed they would eat the loach.
2 x penguin tetras
5 x neon tetras
1 x blue ram

I have the temp set to 27-28 for the ram anyway and the other fish seem to like this setting in there tank. I dont understand why i cant get rid of the white spot and i dont want to lose any fish. I also heard in a shop today, there is mean't to be a new strain of white spot going around is this true? Or is it the classic dont know anything fish shop?

Have tested the water and they have all come back fine ammonia is normal, Nirite is 0.25ppm not matter how hard i try i cant get this down , Nitrate is 20-40ppm.

How many gallons is the tank.

It can take two rounds to get rid of whitespot.
Are you using the full dose or half dose.
You need to raise temp to 30 for whitespot.
Some meds can knock water stats.
What did you last do a gravel vac.

The tank itself is a 25 gallon tank. I am using the full dose of the waterlife product for the whitespot I haver never used the half does method. I have raised the temp to 30 at the moment like someone said to meto do. I have removed my Carbon sponge out of the filter (hang on one) and put in a bucket of there own tank water when i do the treatment then around 30-60mins later i put them back in. I last did a gravel clean yesterday, its normally done once a week.

Throw the black carbon away it only works for 2 to 9 days.

Do you remove the fish as not quite sure what you mean.

No, I do not take the fish out of the tank  , i leave them in there but remove the carbon filter section out of the hang-on filter (has a carbon filter pad and a pre filtration sponge - sponge left in) and put them in a jug of tank water while I treat the tank. As im aware that the carbon in the filter pads would stop the white spot working (and any medicine for that matter).

The additional black carbon is only 5 days old, i put a new lot in very 2 weeks. The loose carbon (that black charcoal stuff), I put it in some tights then cut it down to size and put into hang on filter. I do not leave this in the filter while adding medicine into the water as i know it would stop the whitespot med working.

I am running the temp at 30degC, I have a chocolate gourami that really is off colour due to the white spot. Is there anyway that i can get this treatment go alot quicker? As he is part of a pair that live in the tank and i dont want to lose him. He's one of my fave fish in the tank :(

All you can do really is plenty of aeration.
If some fish looked stressed and acting odd, you could maybe dilute the med down abit with a water change.
