Hi all,

I have 8 zebra danios in my tank. One of them has developed a white growth at the "joint" between the body and tail. It looks a little like "lymphocystis" as described in a book I have, although it does say it's very rare in freshwater fish.

I've tried to attach pics (the best I could get). Can someone please help me diagnose this? We're all worried in the house as these are the very first fish in the tank! One other seems to be getting something similar, but very early stages.

Here are the pics:

In this first one you can see the white area quite clearly.....

You can see it here too, but it's a little less clear.....

PLEASE can someone offer some help? I need to know what this is so I can either treat it or remove the infected fish.

Thanks...

Irf.

The desease is not that rare any more, the virus shows itself like a clump of berries or cauliflower.

Thanks Wilder. OK, so that seems to be it then. I've read the article and it basically states that there is no medication because it is a virus. So what is the suggestion then? Shall I dispose of the infected fish? Or is it too late, and do I have to get rid of all of them? :(

What have others done?

Thanks again.....

Is best to isolate the infected fish, do plenty of water changes as the infected fish would of been releasing the virus into the tank, problem with this virus it can leave a long time years.
Only other option is to strip the tank down and start again, do you have others tanks you could kick start the bacteria colony off with.

If you can't strip the tank down, plenty of water changes, the virus goes in through a cut on the fish, so make sure the fish has no wounds or cuts, and it last several weeks, so other fish might be ok.

Keep water quality in tip top condition, as stressed fish can come down with it, plus do you have any fin nippers as they can pass it on that way.

More info for you.

OK, thanks Wilder.

I don't have another tank, so perhaps it's a fullt strip down. However I might just remove the two obviously infected ones just to see if the others are affected. If they also get it then there are no more fish so then it's a strip down anyway. :-(

Very upsetting for all, cos this is our first tank!

Thanks again....

Sorry yes it's your first tank, got off to a unlucky start, good luck hope the rest make it.

Heh - got the very sick one out easy...... spent the last half hour trying to get the other one and failed. They are so fast! Anyone have any hints on how to catch fish???? :D

Irf

Two nets, or a jug if you are fast.

Update:

The very sick fish died today wile out of the main tank. The other slightly ill looking one appears to still OK. This weekend I'm gonna try to level out the pH it's hovering just below 8.0 at the moment.
