I need help please..........it may be too late but Im desperate. Dropsy!!!! whats the best way to treat this horrible disease? My girl showed signs yesterday and I immediately put her in a fresh tank with bacteria medication and a good dose of marine salt. I have given her a 15 minute bath in epson salt and want to know if she needs the epson salt in her medicated tank as well. I haven't encountered this problem before and am at a bit of a loss as to how to go with treatment. There is another young person on this forum with the same problem but no one has offered any sound advice. Anyone have success in treating this problem please help.

get esha2000, although when these guys show signs of dropsy theres rarely any coming back :(

esha2000 saved my boy :)

When my fish had dropsy I was recommended that salt baths were the best thing for her. Unfortunately it didn't help her :(. Otherwise I don't know what to suggest I'm afraid.

Epsom salts are the way to go. If using in the tank, dose1 tablespoon per 5 gal. If using as a dip 1 teaspoon per gal for up to 30 mins 2 times a day. Keep water pristine and do not overfeed if the fish is still eating.
Can you post a pic? There are other things that can mimic the symptoms of dropsy, namely severe constipation which can make the scales in the belly/ midsection of the fish pinecone. Epsom will help with that as well. Don't use marine or aquarium salt as will make bloating worse.
best of luck.
cheers

Many thanks for the helpful info. I have been only giving her 15min dips as specified on another forum regarding fish diseases. I'll try the 30 min dip this afternoon. She certainly has dropsy I'd like to post photos but have a lot of trouble posting on this forum it never seems to work for me.....but I know she does have dropsy as she has pineconed all over not just her stomach area. So its ok to have medication in her water as well as the epsom salt? I don't like giving her dips as she is getting stressed :-(

You can dose the tank. 1 tablespoon per 5 gals.
Cheers
Many thanks for your reply. What I would like to know is how long does she stay in the tank with the salt? when she starts showing signs of getting better? or only a couple of days or do I change the water every few days, what procedure do I follow? I must admit she hasn't gotten worse she's a tough old girl. She won't eat any processed food but she has had a couple of live bloodworms is that ok for her to eat or not a good idea? I'm sorry to throw so many questions at you but I've never treated this disease before and I don't want to lose her. :-(

esha 2000 is that easy to obtain in any country. I live in North Queensland Australia can I get that at a pet/aquarium store? I don't know what esha is, is it some sort of anti bacterial medication or antibiotic? :)

My fish is still fighting she is still alive. I think she needs to be put down so whats the best way to quickly put her to sleep? I thought she died this morning she was so still. When I picked her up in the net she flipped a bit. I thought she was in the last stages of death but when I put her back in the tank she started moving he gills. Its near sunset now and she is still going. She's a real fighter and doesn't want to go to fish heaven.

Hi Better is Betta, I am from Australia too and I am not sure what Esha 2000 is either.

With Dropsy, it is hard to tell what the underlying cause is. It may be Liver failure, or some bacterial issue. Usually the Betta will pass away eventually.

You can do waterchanges as often as needed but make sure you only redose the volume of water you replace. Example, you have a 5 gal tank and do a 1/3 wc. Redose with 1 teaspoon epsom.( fyi there are 3 teaspoons per tablespoon). You get the idea. If you need help with the math let me know. Just mention the tank volume.
A FEW bloodeorms should be fine but honestly id only feed 1 or2 twice a week and that's it with maybe the exception of a pea if shell eat them.
Don't give up on her..fish can surprise you. If it were me I give the fish every chance it has until they decide to give up. But if you can bear it the fastest way, albeit "worst" for us, is. Either blunt force trauma or severing the head. Its instant.
Hoping for the best
cheers

Better is Betta, know what you're feeling. Mine is in the bottom of his tank trying to resist. It's killing me...

Thank you everyone for your concerns and helpful advice I really appreciated it, but alas my poor girl has departed this world and now is in heaven. I'm saddened by this and I felt I should have done something to put her out of her suffering but always hoped she would get better. She hung on for a week and suffered thats what is upsetting. The only good that has come out of this is she had babies 2 months ago and I have lots of little guys and gals that look just like her. :)

I'm so sorry for your lost. But the good side is that you have her babies, and they will be just fine.
I lost mine this morning.... :rip:
