As the title says i have brown spots on my glass and gravel, they have just appeared and i dont know wether it is a good/bad sign or what i should do about it.

Any advice would be appreciated as i am a complete newbie and only know what i have managed to read on this forum and the tropical fish forever website that led me to this site.

My tank isn't cycled yet and i dont have any testing kit. I have had the tank for three weeks and have had 4 guppies in it for 2 weeks, there were 5 but 1 died the day after i bought them. my tank is a 60 litre and i am changing 10 litres every other day.

It is most likely algae. Here is some slected info from a pinned topic.

Brown algae AKA Diatoms
Description
This type of algae is actually a diatom. Diatoms often form a soft brown clump and are often seen in new, immature, set ups. Diatoms are usually a result of lack of light or an excess of silicates (which they need to multiply).

Possible cure
Increasing the light levels, by adding more light of keeping existing light on for longer, will usually make it disappear. Diatoms can be easily removed by wiping the glass or decorations. I have heard that in America there is a silicate absorbing filter media available, but I have not seen it anywhere on the net.
