Ok so I have had my new semi planted 350L tank set up for about 10 days now. I have used a small amount of cycled filter media from my old tank and have put in 6 congo tetras to help cycle. I have added nutrafin cycle and plant food.

Within a week of setting up the tank brown, hairy, stringy algae and some green fuzzy algae has developed in the tank. The brown algae is all over the leaves of the plants and bogwood and hanging off things in strings.

Also, the water smells kind of odd, not an ammonia smell but a strong sort of pungent smell.

I have tested the water and ammonia is 0, nitrites are 0 and nitrates are 20ppm.

Why is it here and how do I get rid of it?!

aslong as ammonia and nitrite are 0 for 8 consecutive days, your tank will be cycled, readings look good!

Just clean tank more, syphon substrate, remove dead plants, uneaten food etc, cut down tank light time! :)
