Hi everyone-

I need some help. My latest spawn will be a month old thursday. I had been averaging a fry death evey day or so. I do 10 % water changes daily and feed attsons and bbs 3-4 times a day. This morning I woke up and 5 fry were dead on the bottom. They looked healthy big bellies and no sign of fungus. They had turned white. I thought maybe it ws ammonia burns killing them. I tested and my nitrite and ammonia are both at 0ppm. I filled the tank from 50 % water to 100 % this weekend. Could that kill them? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks
Nikki

Hi Nikki

Im afraid I dont have any suggestions for you, I am replying to you as I have the EXACT same problem. My fry are 7 weeks old. I feed them BBS, microworms and ground Attisons Betta pellets daily. The tank gets 10% daily water changes and is a constant 0ppm ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph 7. They were in perfect health, until, last weekend I did a 50% water change to remove any hormone (the fry are smaller than expected), and since then I have lost 5 fry a day, and they turn white upon death. They are gasping at the surface or gasping on the bottom. I am frustrated and stumped also. I can only presume its an internal bacterial infection that was introduced in larger numbers than usual with the larger water change, and the water change itself caused some stress and immune system drop, meaning the fry are succumbing to infection. It could be gill parasites also. The white color of the corpses must be an oppurtunistic bacterial film or fungus. I removed the carbon, added an extra aeration stone, and added Interpet anti-internal bacteria, anti-fungus and finrot, anti-slime & velvet and stress-coat. Alot of drugs I know but doing nothing was not working. If its the water quality its not something I can treat or detect. If its infection it may be too late for all the fry. Good luck to both of us!

are you making sure the temparature of the water you put in is identical to the tank water?

if its not or ur not sure... then maybe try putting in smaller amounts of water per 2 hours instead, maybe the temperature change is too much of a shock for the fry to handle..

the only things u guys have in common is ur both doing 10% water changes and what are the chances of you both getting exactly the same disease with the exact same symptoms? i defenetly wouldnt be doing 50% water changes while they are fry its too much of a change to handle instantly i think
