Hi to one and all.

I'm having a serious problem with algae growth in my tank.

The tank is only a 10 gallon and had been running, without a problem since 2001. Had a nice collection of fish which were all fine and dandy until I was hospitalized last August. Had to rely on someone else to make sure they were being fed, filter was cleaned and the timer on the light was working well.. BUT.. surprise surprise THEY FAILED! They left the light on for days at a time, didn't feed them, never touched the filter once and as a result the tank turned sour (I didn't come home from hospital till November!)

Anyway... all fish except 1 male Gourami perished.

The tank was cleaned out, everything replaced and was up and running within hours of me being home but it's caused no end of problems since. The algae growth is something I've never experienced in all the years I've kept fish. It's nuclear green and not only covers the glass, but also the slate, it's covering the gravel like slime. It appears almost over night after it's been cleaned away and doesn't seem to stop. 1 day a small patch was visible on the slate - we went to bed and in the morning the entire piece was covered.

I do regular water changes and keep the filter clean. I've reduced the light down to 9 hours and the tank isn't in the direct path of sunlight. Temp is 25c. Water tested fine.

I let the tank run for 5 weeks after the big clean then tried to add new fish over the course of the last few months, most of which have not lasted more than a week - Mr Gourami is still alive and kicking tho.

Only fish left are - 1 male gourami and a large shark catfish.

Has anyone got any ideas what I could be doing wrong or why the algae is outta control?

Any replies would be welcomed

Thanks in advance guys!
