Dear all, my main tank sprung a leak last night, and so I had to ferry out all the fish to my other tanks.

However, the only tank big enough to house my hoplos was the tank belonging to Bob the bumblebee catfish, who has become even more aggressive than I have previously noted. This is obviously very very temporary as I had no other choice!

I went to the LFS in my area (im on foot) and grabbed the biggest tank i could afford that would fit on my current stand.

The Elite Style35.

At the store I asked if this tank would be ok on my stand, and was told yes, so off I toddled.

get home and actually bother to read the instructions, which tell me cannot use polystyrene under the base. This tank comes with a stand specifically made for it, but you can also buy it seperately too, which should surely mean it can be used seperately...

Anyway, the help I need: does any one have any experience in this or a similar matter? Can I set up the tank on the stand (which is larger than the tank base) without supporting the internally raised bottom pane of glass? I really cant afford another break (just starting Msc so very short!), so need to be sure, but equally: I cant risk torturing my fish by leaving them with bob for a night....

HELP!

I have a couple of Juwel tanks that have the same idea. A kind of plastic framework that they sit in. Like you I was rather sceptical but followed the manual, didn't put a soft surface underneath and have had no problems touchwood.

Edit: after having re-read your post I gather that the tank is just a glass tank, no framework or anything is that right? My tanks sit in their own plastic frame on top of the stand.

Maybe with yours, the stand has this type of base? if your tank has just a glass bottom then surely it would need to be supported all over?

Maybe one of the more experienced guys can clarify

Hey thanks for the response!

Right by plastic frame to you mean a piece of plastic that surrounds the bottom edge of the tank? but leaves the inner surface of the bottom pane 'blank'?

(A bit like a picture frame on the bottom of a tank) where the frame touches the the 'ground' but the glass does not? If so then wahey!

Yes, mine have a plastic edge all the way around plus a couple of struts across the centre which I guess is to keep it in shape. This whole thing just sits straight on the wood of the stand!

Thanks, tank is set up and filled up, just off to grap some plastic floating plants to give some more shade for him :p that light is pretty bright!

t :shout: Have some experience with two tanks that leaked, we fixed it by removing the bottom and replacing it with thicker glass and polyester. It hasn't given a problem yet. A steady bigger base than the tank is ideal. I'm not sure why the manufacturers don't use polyester except if it's thick glass used at the bottom or it's one of these modern new looks. For me if it's one of the usual looking tanks I'll put polyester underneath 4 XTRA SUPPORT
