Hi Everyone,

I just found this forum today and it looks like it has a wealth of information. I look forward to learning more about freshwater aquariums and keeping healthy fish.

I have had ten gallon aquariums in the past. I always had good luck with them.

I got a 55 gallon aquarium over this last weekend. I had hoped to get a large one, and I am very excited. I had heard mixed information as to whether I should let it sit for a while before adding fish or not to. Most people said not to wait so I didn't, although from what I understand now I should have. :(

There is a picture of my tank. I have some live plants and I hope they survive as I am really bad luck with any and all plants.

Right now I have a bala shark, two black mollies, five flame tetras, and a mystery snail that I'm pretty sure is an apple snail. Oh, and two ghost shrimp. I hope to add some more fish including black skirted tetras, neon tetras and some swordtails.

Thanks for reading my intro and I look forward to learning about freshwater aquariums. :)

Welcome to the forum, Dallionz!

It doesn't do your tank any good to sit with water in it and the filter running- you need to cycle it. You can either do it using the fishless method (which I prefer because no fish are harmed, it's cheaper, and it takes less time) or using hardy fish to cycle it. There are some pinned articles in the Beginner's Section that should help you out. :)

Now that you've added fish to the aquarium you should do water changes every day or two. Good luck with your fish and plants

Thank you for the welcome! :)

J_acon: I plan on asking a few plant questions this weekend once I take pictures of the plants for identification. I'm having some issues with one of them.

cutechic: I've started reading the pinned information in the beginners section. And I'll start water changes soon. I'm taking a water sample to have it checked this afternoon.

Thanks again. :)

Hi Dallionz :)

Welcome to the forum! :hi:

If you just go slowly and do lots of water changes, your lovely tank will be safely cycled before you know it!

That is a beautiful tank! :hi:
Keep us posted on your progress.
