I wanted to post here as a courtesy before I begin asking a ton of questions on the rest of the forum. I've always been interested in starting an aquarium for fun but never knew how to start. Last week a coworker gave me some old equipment for a 10 gallon aquarium. Since then I've done a lot of internet research about what all the parts are for and actually ended up replacing everything except the hood.
I've also read a lot about cycling. My opinion is that it is complicated by the marketing departments of these chemical companies claiming to help you eliminate "new tank syndrome". This "syndrome" is actually a natural process that can't be skipped. Everyone I've talked to has used fish for cycling, but since I have the time (and I don't know enough about actually taking care of the fish yet) I've chosen to do fishless cycling with ammonia. The Fishless Cycling for Dummies article is actually what first brought me to this forum.
If I can do this correctly, my wife wants me to start an aquarium in her office at work. I would also want to eventually experiment with planted aquariums and maybe saltwater and coral in the future.
I am excited to have some relaxing fish to watch swim but I am equally enthusiastic about learning how to make sure they are the most comfortable and healthy living in the tank.
Picture if you're into it. Day 1 of THE CYCLE:
