Hi all! I am new as you can see.

I have been trying to find a forum I really enjoy, and this one is the best I have run across as of yet! It seems to be pretty active and is nice and clean. I hope to learn more about every one here and get some idea for my tank I am in the process of setting up.

More about me later, right now, it is time for beddybye.

:)

Hello and :hi: to TFF!

I myself have not found a forum I favor more, this one is so just dang perfect!
Lol, hi!

Hello and welcome to the forum. :hi:

I think you will like it here. It is a good family forum and the mods are very active to clean up any posts that are suspect (and those are very few and far between).

I see by your signature that you have a betta in the same tank with danios. That isn't a good match as danios are extremely active and like a good current/water flow. Bettas prefer calmer water. The betta may be stressed by the water flow and the activity of the danios. Also, did you do a fishless cycle on the tank? If not, make sure you are checking your ammonia and nitrite daily as they will soon be off the chart with that many fish.

I did do a fishless cycle using a filter from a known and established healthy aquarium. I left the betta in the new tank by himself for a few days, all the levels looked fine so I added some more fish.

As for the current, they betta seems to be doing fine. When he wants a rest he hangs out in the 'no-current' section of the tank by his almond leaf. But most of the time he is out and about swimming around. He doesn't seem to be stressed at all. In fact, he has never looked better. I am going to watch him though, his fins seem different to me. I just noticed that last night. They are not diseased, but looks like in one area has split. I thought it might be all the swimming he is doing. He is also missing a section of his dorsal. At least I THINK he is, I don't know EXACTLY what it looke like before, it just looks different to me know.

The danios on the other hand seem to have some kind of problem with thier fins. They have gotten short and frayed. They don't look white and fuzzy, like a fungus, but I can't get a good look at them either, they are so dang fast.

Any help would be appriciated! I will post to the sick fish forum as well.

Thanks!

As you already know, bettas are mostly fins and tail. Those are very delicate and anything can tear or rip them. He could have been nipped by the danios or he could simply be tearing them on something in the tank. Things such as plastic plants (real or silk are better) or jagged/rough edged rocks are best kept out of tanks with bettas. Mine were even tearing their fins by swimming behind my HOB filters and the heaters in their 2.5 gallon tanks. I had to rig a way to completely seal them off so the bettas couldn't get behind them. Their fins have healed nicely now but it does take time, probably 3 months for mine to completely grow theirs back. For the crown tail (which have jagged tails anyway) though, it seems to take longer since the tail is already frayed looking.

I posted in the Emergency section, there are links to the pictures I took of the rock and the betta i have in the tank.

I do have some plastic plants in the tank and I just might take them out. I really don't want to keep my betta in a smaller tank, he is having SO much fun!
