Hey there, just thought I would come and introduce myself... My name is Charmaine, from London. Purchased my first set of fish today, so thought it a good idea to come and register here, as I'm somewhat nervous and could do with some advice on some aspects of fish care !!! Speak to you soon hopefully =)

Hey there, nice to meet you + thanks for the welcome. I got some neon Tetra, just 6, as the guy at the shop advised me not to get too many different kinds at once. Seem okay so far, although a lot of the food I've fed them has ended up at the bottom of the tank, so a bit worried !! What fish do you have? =)

Hi and welcome!!

Is it a new tank set-up you have? Neon tetras are lovely fish, but don't do to well in newly established tanks.

Happy fishkeeping!!

Think I have run before I can walk ....... have 4 cherry barbs had 6 lost 2, 2 Rainbow fish which will be the only 2 big fish I can have, 2 dwarf guaramis and a tinky tiny pygmy puffer
actually saying it's my tank but it's my daughters her 20th Birthday Wednesday but I have taken to it big time :D we have been going to the shop together and choosing togeher. Still learning on the feeding process feeding flakes once in the evening today bought some frozen blood worm for the Rainbows and was told thats all the Pygmy Puffer will eat but did see it eat a few so was happy. Had the some worms at the bottom of the tank left didn't know what to do so got boyfriend to take them out

Hi just read your post I didn't realise neon tetras do not do well in new tanks :( Little too late now hope they will be ok :)

Hi Sugarqube,

I was going to get neon tetras for my tank, luckily the guy who was working there told me that they should not be introduced for atleast 2 months after set-up.

If your tank is not done cycling, make sure you test the water daily, and make partial water changes accordingly.

Argh I hope they're going to be okay ! I guess it's all a learning process, but I want to kill as few fish as possible, especially as I don't know how my 4 year old son is going to react when he realises that the fish wont be there forever !! Do you have any suggestions as to which fish are good to start off with? Perhaps I'll have a snoop through the forums as I'm sure this question must have been answered somewhere! =)

Take a look at the pinned topics in beginner forum, specifically regarding cycling. This way you will get an idea about cycling, and new tank syndrome. Also please look at fishless cycling.

Adding more fish at this point, could harm the ones you have because of the added ammonia, so my best advice to you is to create a new post, once you have read about the cycling, and explain your situation in the beginner forum, you can always refer to this post.

When you decide to write the new post give as much info as you can, tank size, inhabitants, how long it has been running.

If you don't have it yet, get a liquid testing kit, not the strips, to measure ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, you will see the importance of this after you read the pinned artichles I referred to above.

Sorry I can't be of more help. but am not as experienced as most people here, and I myself made mistakes in the beginning because of bad advice from LFS.

Thats great thanks. I'm going to read up on it a bit later, and make a post also so that I can try and get some advice. You've been a lot of help, much appreciated =)

Hi I'm a newbie too. I was advised not to have neon tetra in my new tank. I had platties and bronze cory to begin with, now I have clown loach and red eyed tetra, red fin sharks guppies and mollies.
Good luck with your new tank
