I'd just like to introduce myself. After keeping goldfish back when the days I was still in secondary school, I'm back now after several years with a new tank and fish. It is a tall 30 gallon tank with a Eheim Canister filter. It holds my 6 Koi Anglefish and lonely pleco. I wanted to keep some real plants for the anglefish but I was told my pleco would eat them. Is this true?

:hi: to the forum.

Is it a common plec? If so, you might want to consider giving it away, since they get to well over a foot.

As for it being lonely... they are territorial/ aggressive fish, and they also enjoy latching onto the sides of big, slow-moving fish. *looks at large, disc-shaped, slow-moving koi angels in Crossfc's tank*

Alternatives can be found in the cats section. ^_^

Otherwise, your tank looks good despite the lack of plants. Speaking of which, you might want to check out the plant forum to see if a planted tank is for you. ;)

Glad to have to you with us, see you around. :fun:

I'm not very sure if it is a common plec. It is blackish in color but not solid black. More of a beige/black mix that is predominately black. Fins are spotted beige but they're not uniform spots. There is a picture of it in my signature. It hasn't bothered the angelfish yet and they're still kinda small to latch on to. Plus the angelfish like to dart around the tank, they're quite fast when they see food.

It isn't planted much because the owner of the fishstore said the pleco would gobble the plants up. If the pleco and angelfish would live peacefully with plants, I'd replace the two plastic ones and probably add another 3 plants in the tank. Any advice?

That's a bit quick suggesting to think about giving it away if you have no idea what it is even !
There are so many pleco's ranging in size - not all reach several feet. Pleco's are "cats" (catfish) afterall -_-

Common abbreviation loosely applied to many species of the Loricarid family of armored catfish and other similar fish, not just to the type species Hypostomus Plecostomus.

And not all are territorial/aggressive. Some are lovely community fish and will happily share their home with other catfish.

Yes, some can eat plants - it just depends what plants etc. but I think some lovely long Vallis should be nice. Too thin and "light" for a pleco to latch onto and eat and quite a hardy, fairly easy growing plant.

Crossfc, take a look at the main headings of the forums (there are many different sections) and browse around for some more info :good:

Now, look a bit more closely, and you will see that I asked: "Is it a common plec?" I made this suggestion only if the plec was a common plec. Therefore, I would not think that my suggestion to consider giving it away was made too hastily or that it was unwarranted.

Also, another plant that many fish dislike would be the java fern. Might want to look into that as well. ;)
