Hi I brought 5 platys today and all apart from one has taken well within the tank itself. (Im new at keeping fish) The one thats not taking well i think is a female. How do you tell if its pregnant or not? It seems to be staying in one main area near the water pump at the bottom where there is some plants. Is this because she is nearing birthing or is it because she is shy? I really dont know? Can anyone help please

I buy fish and they do that with me they look fine in the shop but when they go in your tank they freeze sorryi cant help.

hi there...........and Welcome Newfishkeeper :D

how big is the tank you got and have you had it set up for long? Click here :D for a link to cycling your tank......it's an awesome article about your first tank and what cycling is about.

Your little plattie may be pregnant, due to give birth and the move will have been very stressful for her. Keep the tank quiet and lights out for a few hours to see if that helps

good luck and keep posting to let us know how you get on

Hello Everybody,

Thanks for your reply, We slightly turned the temperature down yesterday, and turned the lights off overnight as usual and all four of them seem active today, but I found the one female lying inside an artificial little cave! She only seems tocome out for the occasional swim and food so she must be pregnant! Better buy somewhere for her to birth her young!!
Thank you all again! :fish: :fish: :fish:

Hi only me again,

just to let you know one of my females gave birth the following day, but i had not quite brought the birthing tank so today i have been trying to get them into the tank and at last count we have 13 babies. Unfortunately three of my adults all died overnight misteriously so i took 2 back to the shop i brought them! They replaced them for me but fortunately for me i think the problem is on there end. They had 2 dead fish in the tank i bought mine from so lets see if my new fish take a little longer!

Thanx for all your advise much appreciated!

:D

Hi newfishkeeper :)

Welcome to the forum. :flowers:

Unfortunately, your experience is all too common with people just starting out in the hobby. There are some basic things to learn, but once you have a good understanding of how things work, I'm sure your luck will improve. I'll be looking forward to your posts in the Beginners section of the forum.

Good luck with this most enjoyable hobby!
