hello, i am relatively new to tropical fish. we bought a tank for my son's birthday and then i decided to have one of my own - just awaiting for my nitrate level to settle and then i'll be able to have some more.

anyway we have a major problem with my son's fish. basically he had a rena kid 40 starter aquarium and the light packed up - we changed the bulb but to no avail. anyway we went back to where we bought the tank from and he said it wasnt worth buying a new light as you were nearly there for a new tank. so yesterday we bought the new tank (the chap said everything would be fine just syphon the water over to the new tank) we did need to add some fresh water but i added a little aquasafe and easybalance to the water. filters heaters etc appear to be working fine.

disaster has struck overnight we have lost all but 1 fish (my 5yr old is v.sad) and the water has gone cloudy. i've tested the nitrate and thats fine. should we have waited to put the fish in? have we been given wrong information? i feel v.guilty as they were all fine in there old tank but as we are new to the scene i hope someone can advise.

thanks

sarah

hi,
welcome to tff,
sorry to hear about your little boys fish tank,
how old was his first tank? if it was over 6 weeks it would be classed as mature/cycled, when you changed tanks did you put in the old filter? that would of had all the good bacteria on it, was the new tank the same size? is the only fish still alive? if so do a water change and taes for ammonia and nitrite these stay at 0 in a tank thats mature/cycled, for more info on the cycle go to the beginner section and see the pinned topic at the top for help. if you need more help post on chat or emerg sections, you will get help faster. all the best with the tanks donna :) .

hi donna, his tank was set up end of april. i said about using the old filter to the so called expert at the aquatic centre he said no need and the hubby went with his decision. we have one left but hes now in the bigger tank downstairs (although the nitrate level isnt right yet i thought this was his best chance of survival and up to now he seems ok). my other half did a complete water change now and its still cloudy but theres no fish in it so hopefully it will settle. we are going to another centre where we usually get the fish from and i will have lukes water tested there at the weekend cos they seem to know what they are on with a lot better.
