hall6pack here to say HELLO to all!
I'm Susan Hall - wife to the wonderful James and mom to 5 great kiddos - also 1 kitty and 2 tanks of my "water babies".
In January we bought a 20 gal set-up tank. We then purchased 14 fish (2 for each family member). 2 molly, 2 platy, 2 black skirt tetra, 2 neon, 1 buenos aires tetra, 1 lemon tetra and 6 guppy. We later realized that we had too many fish for this size tank, but still managed to keep everyone healthy and happy.
For my b-day my hubby surprised me with a beautiful 56 gal tank! After it sat, we introduced our larger fish from the 20 gal tank - the 2 black skirt tetra, lemon tetra and the buenos aires tetra. Boy did they seem happy with the move! A week later we introduced a few more fish - another week later some more. We now have angel fish, dwarf groumis, sword tail, and 2 small plecos added to the tank. All are fine and dandy with the exception of our little lemon tetra. Woke up one morning to find he had passed in the night. No obvious physical problems - no behavoral problems before.?. (we ckeck tank conditions every week and do water changes every week as well)
Today I was wakened by my kiddos saying we have a sick molly in the 20 gal. She had a severe case of whirling disease. I didn't think a fish could twirl so fast in a circle - for so long. It took a good while before I found out what it was - then I removed her and euthanized (sp?) her. Sad but necessary. All of us are on the lookout for any others with signs of this disease. Late now so tomorrow off to purchase med's for 20 gal. I understand they need a antiparasite medicated food.
Ok - enough of the sad talk - more smiles!
I love this forum and have used it many times since january to learn about my water babies - their likes, favorite foods and living quarters, etc...
Thanks for all the great info - it's obvious people here love their water babies too!
