Hello everyone, :D

I've been reading this board for a few weeks now and really like all the info! I have two VT male bettas and would love to get some HM and CTs. So far I haven't been able to find any locally and I hate the idea of shipping them. :/

Anyhoo I thought I might share some info for those of you who keep getting upset about your local lfs. I happen to work for Petsmart. I have worked for them for almost 6 years now. I have worked in two different stores, one in Florida, and my current one in Texas. At both stores the care and wellbeing of the animals including the bettas was/is always #1 priority. Now I know that this isn't the case at every store.

What makes the difference is wether the manager of that dept cares and knows what they are doing. Some stores have great employees, some don't. It can be really challenging to get good help when you don't pay crap (and retail always pays crap). My experience is that the really good people stay because they enjoy their job and care about the animals unfortunately they are few and far between.

That said, Petsmart as a company is really strict about the care of animals in their stores. If you see a problem at a store near you here is what I reccomend doing:

#1) Bring the problem to an employees attention, and try to politely educatue them.

#2) Talk to a manager, preferably the department mgr, or store manager.

#3) If none of the above helps then call or email corporate headquarters in Pheonix AZ. I can promise you they will care!

I am also happy to report that all the new stores being built have smaller (1-2gall) betta tanks built in to the main fish system, so no more little cups!
Also for those who think that only mass chains neglect bettas, I went across town to a specailty fish store to see if they had any non-VT bettas. They had row after row of beautiful saltwater and freshwater tanks. They also had about a dozen VT bettas in tiny little cups. All of them had severe fin rot, and at least half of them were dead. I was more than a little pissed....

Fat-cat,

Since I discovered this hobby in December, I can't stay away from the LFS stores. I visit the Petsmart on South Blvd in Charlotte, NC on almost a daily basis (who needs to eat on their lunch hour). Their tanks are sparkling and their people (Joe and Lauren) are very knowledgable. It is probably my favorite LFS to go in. I will definitely be buying some angels from them as soon as my 75 gallon is planted and cycled (it just delivered today). Keep up the good work.

Bob

wow i dont have a petsmart so it helps 2 know that some of them arewell educated and WOW 1-2 gallons that ausom!!!!!!! :)

Well the Petsmart that I go to is different. They have the Bettas in small cups and the water is disgusting and they have no airholes. They also have other fish that are dead at the bottom of the tank. I actually went there today and there were four fish that were just torn to pieces and there were more being killed. I did tell the employee but she didn't do anything about it while I was there. I didn't buy my betta from there since the Walmart acrross the street keeps them in better shape.

is there anybettas that wont ripe the crap out of other fish ? if you put it in a 90gallon tank

Don't just "mention it to an employee" if the conditions are that bad speak to the dept. manager or store director. The regular employees are often just kids and if the person is new they may not know what should be done. If speaking with a manager doesn't improve things then call or e-mail corporate.

Actually I know for a fact that the employee I spoke to wasnt knew. I've been going to that Petsmart since I moved to Texas a year and a half ago and she's been there ever since.

Well if that person disen't care (and it appears they don't) then you go to the peson above them....and you repeat that process until you find someone that does care or you run out of options. That is the way you get things changed.

Dwarf, I've never tried to put bettas in a tank with anything else but I don't think bettas will bother anything they don't see as a threat or another betta. You have to stay away from angels, fancy guppies or anything with a big tail that they think is another betta. You also have to watch out for the other side, fish like serpae tetras that are notorius fin nippers that will harass the betta to death. IMO, I think for the most part, they are better off in a tank (at minimum 1 gallon, preferable 2+ gallon) by themselves or with fish like corys that stay predominantly on the bottom.
