I cant find out where it was that I saw the mention. I think it might have been pool filter sand, but I am not sure. They were talking about a heavy sand that was more resistant to getting vacuumed out, as well as blowing around. Anyone have any suggestions?

I don't know if they sell this in the UK, but 3M colorquartz is pretty heavy and doesn't compact like regular sand. :good:

EDIT: Whoops, just realized you are in the US! Just google that name and see if you have any suppliers near you. Great stuff!

Thanks Shelaghfishface, it was a bit of a trial if you remember. And as it turns out, the supermend epoxy was crap. It seems as though it has gone soft in the tank, but at this point I am afraid to ty anything else with it. Maybe once I have room for the next tank, I will move everyone out and do it up proper, now that I have a clue as to what I can expect.

Invader, I will take a look. I have a sand bottom in one of my other tanks, and I am always watching it swirl and eddy about. It cant help but wonder how good that is for the impeller. I will look for that 3M stuff. What is it used for? Have you tried planting in it?

The main purpose for this stuff is to line pools, if I remember correctly. I have been using it for months now with no ill effects and I've heard of people using it for years with no problems either.

I haven't tried planting in it, as I'm still in the planning stages of that. Because it doesn't compact down, I would think that it would be easy to uproot the plants if you have larger fish. That's my biggest concern right now, tbh.

There are two different grades, T and S. One being fine and one being more coarse... comparable to sand and gravel, I think. I use black, S Grade and I think it looks great! (Excuse the bareness... I'm still in a planning stage for this tank)

You can see the grains in this pic... and see how they are spherical? That's what stops them from compacting down.
