I’ve just completed my first ever tanks cycling and added 4 neon tetras to my 10G tank.

I have got my Elite 50W heater set to 26 degrees C and have believed this to be working fine BUT i've only just bought a thermometer and placed it in the tank with the fish and its reading 32 degrees C.....!

I have left the thermometer in the tank for a few hours now so it should be an accurate reading and when it is removed from the tank the temp reading does drop...

Is there a problem with my heater? Is this a common problem? All advice welcome :(

I would go with the separate thermometer. Many thermometers on heaters don't work very well and can be inaccurate.

you really should have checked you had the temp right before you added fish and a thermometer should have been one of the 1st things you bought. But never mind, leason learned!

you could do a water change and add some cooler water. turn you heater down a bit too.

hope this helps

Don't do a water change and just replace it with cooler water. This could give your fish temperature shock! I would take the heater out for now and just maybe empty out a little bit of the water and add a little cool water. Then a few hours later add a little more cooler water. But make sure you do it very slowly so your fish don't go into a temp. shock.

thanks for the advice Raechal & loafybones, and i know now that i should have checked the temp before :) if the temp has done any damage how soon will i know?

will follow your advice raechal and hope that everything works out okay :S

should i replace the heater or should wait till the temp is back to normal and just lower the heating setting?
