Ok, I've just recently set up a smaller 5 gallon tank than my 29, and I actually forgot to buy a heater for it. I had realized this after I had set the whole thing up and had everything else I needed in it. Everythings running fine, the fish in it is healthy, and I was wondering if I needed a heater at all, because the temp has been at 74F for a couple of days now. The only fish in the tank is my mosquito fish.

I would recommend a heater, because your tank is a constant 74 at the moment, but the weather is unpredictable, as is central heating, so you might want to have a heater just for reassurance, also you might decide to get fish that like the temperature above 74.

I highly recommend the Hydor "Theo" 25 watt heaters. It came to me recommended by another forum member. I put one in my 5 gallon tank. It works better than any heater I own! Accurate within 1 degree, even with the divider in my 5 gallon tank.

I highly recommend that you AVOID Elite heaters. There are HUNDREDS of cases on the internet of people who have had these heaters malfunction. I was one of them; just a few months ago the thermostat in the heater broke, leaving the heater on 24/7. I pulled it out of the tank when the tank was 90F.
