I'm currently looking at purchasing a Fluval E series heater for my 160Ltr tank and am looking at the 200w one as it is the correct size for my tank however the 300w one is only a pound more and i was wandering if it better to use a bigger heater than needed as it is to use a bigger filter than needed or could this cause problems?

thanks in advance for your help,
Maz.

I don't think it could do any harm, I have a 300w in my 110l. I think it just helps with getting to the required temp that bit quicker!

Sorry I meant 200w

Its best to use the one recommended as if the thermostat breaks in the heater, you will have fried fish in a small tank but in a larger tank it will never get the water hot enough.

Thanks guys - I never thought about the fried fish thing. I think i will get the 200w just to be on the safe side.

I have a 300w E Series on my 300l tank and in this bit of a cold snap, it will only keep the temp between 22 and 23 degrees. They are fantastic heaters but this is not good.
