heaters usually have a red light that comes on when they are warming the water. The red light goes out when they aren't warming the water. Turn the dial one way and if the light goes out then that is lowering the temperature. If the light stays on then the temp is going to go up.
There might also be a little arrow drawn on the side of the heater near the dial which should show a + for turning it up and a - for turning it down.

Mine is a juwel heater and it just has + and - on it. Ive found if the setting is between the plus and minus you get about 28 degrees, but I suspect everyones is different. I will go and have a look to see if its anticlockwise that turns it down, that might help you.![]()
I've got one like that in my Juwel tank and I found it a real pain. It took a couple of days and guesswork to get it to the right setting. Kept moving the dial a little bit, leaving it for a few hours to see what the temp went down to (the original setting was too high), then moved it a bit more, until it was right.
Don't know why they have to make our life so difficult - the ones with actual numbers on are so much easier to set.
