i just put my heater in the tank and it wouldnt start up for about 10 mins. i did leave it in for 15 mins before switching it on.. it keeps turning on and off but now its currently on... is this stuffed or are they normal?

That's normal, they have a built in thermostat so that they arent constantly on. Most will have an indicator light as well to let you know it's on. I wouldnt worry about it but just monitor your temps at first as most heaters are a few degrees off.

i no it has a thermostat although the water was cold and it was set to 24 degrees. it started heating then it stopped.. started then it went normal :S

When the water reaches the proper temperature that u put it on the heater. For example u put the heater on 24 degrees celcius when the water reaches this temperature it will automatically stoop. Mine do the same thing.

You will always get a certain amount of on-off-on-off behaviour even when the water temp is many degrees below the thermostat setting. The heater will come on, heat the water near it, and heat itself up as well, until, unfortunately it fools itself into switching off even though the water is nowhere near temperature. Good circulation of water past the heater will help this but you'll always get it some.

If I fill a tank anew I will try and make the water roughly what I want anyway, but if it's a long way out I will probably turn the heater a bit higher than I want the temperature for a while, until it gets near ish the target, or put in a spare heater while it gets going.
