I love Tronic heaters because they've done so well for me out of all the heaters I've tried. I also see they sell these little guard gizmos for on them - keep some species from cracking them and keep some species from getting burnt.

Is this a good buy for a betta tank heater? Or a waste of money?

well... if the tank is small and the betta keeps knockin into it.. then maybe yea... bt if the tank is big enough so the betta wont keep bumping up against it then its prob a waste

Oh yeah forgot to mention it's in a partitioned 10g tank. So the betta will have a good 1.5-2.5 gallons to work with ... possibly up to 3.3.

Heater guards are generally to protect the heater from large fish like Oscars, I highly doubt a Betta can do any harm. At the same time the Betta can only get burnt by the heater if he, for some reason, likes to lean up against it. Most likely you don't need to worry about it.
