Heater Gone Hay Wire...help!

I came home to find my heater on (I think its been on all day) and I have a thermometer in the tank and it read 90F but when I stuck my finger in the water it didn't feel hot and felt the same as the 55g. But the heater keeps going on and off (but staying on longer than staying off). So should I use the 50 watt heater that I use for my long 20g or what?

50watt heater how many gallons is the tank it will be going in.

Well I now know its not the thermometer because I put it in my 2.5g and it gave the same reading of 70 degrees but it says 90 degrees in the 10g. So could I just pull this one out and put the one I use for my long 20g in it and plug it in?
