had a perfectly healthy male guppy he had persistantly been harrasing preg female for hours so locked him up over night to giv her peace. woke up in morning he was dead can fish take heart attacks????

I've seen a guppy have a heart attack. He was swimming in the tank, and once he was in the middle of the tank, he stopped swimming, and just floated to the top, dead. It was really wierd to watch a completely healthy fish just die in front of you. I think it is very uncommon though.

I'm not saying it wasn't but how do you know it was a heart attack!

I very much doubt that fish can have heart attacks!

Heart attacks are most commonly due to a blockage in the coronary artery, normally a build up of lipids (thats why you have your cholesterol checked). I doubt fish suffer from high cholesterol levels, however i'm not a vet. Stress can cause heart attacks, but the stress puts more work upon the heart and causes the lipids (Atherosis sp) to split and burst within the artery, letting of the clotting cascade and causing the blockage. There is you heart attack. So actually whilst typing this and thinking about it...No fish don't have heart attacks.

They may suffer cardiac arrest though.
