hi a couple of my plattys are pregnant i have had fry before but before i found them in my internal filter thats how they survived. i have got another tank set up for them this time, i was just wondering how platys give birth? do they come out as eggs or whole. and how long is it normally before she has her fry?
thanks

They give birth to tiny live fish. Hence the name Livebearers :) They normally have a gestation period of 3 1/2-4 weeks, however this can chanhe depending on the age of the female, the size of the female, and the number of fry she's having.

You can count exactly to the day for my platy. 3 weeks on the dot for the last 4 months lol

ok thanks  she is quite large will it be ok just to put her in a breeding net untill she has them or will she eat them straight away

Most fish do not like breeding traps. Sometimes they will even abort. Make sure you have lots of places for the fry to hide when they are born, like plants and stuff. Even the mother likes a place to hide to have them too. You can even float some in the top of the water too. My fish dont like to give birth during the day time, its usually at night and when the light is off.

I have one that drops all the time. She will give birth in a net but she will eat them.
