I started cycling last night and used mature media out of my exisitng tank to give it a kickstart.

However, I filled the tank up with cold water the night before, then turned the filter and heater on last night, i.e. I put the mature filter media into cold water, did I kill it by doing that?

If I did, how long should I leave the new media that I put into the existing tank to replace what I'd taken out, before trying again? (I used half of a Fluval One filter sponge).

Cheers,

Paul.

Some bacteria thrive in colder water. You've got to remember that there are people who have a cold water set up. Meaning their water is really cold :p.

And to boot. I fill up my tank using a garden hose 8). I don't want to carry buckets of water around the house. When refilling, remember always to put some conditioner in your tap water.

As long as it was kept wet it should have been ok. I use media from my other tank for my new tank too, and i got some filter poly wool from the woman who sold me some fishies! Double mature media!LOL! GRJ
